Motown Revue Photo Booth

How’s it going in photoland?! Last weekend I had very tiresome, but super fun task of photographing at the play “Motown Revue” in Wilson, NC. The reason I’m STILL trying to catch up on my sleep is because in addition to photographing the entire play (both nights of production), I was also a vendor. So to spice things up a bit and make things fun I decided to have some of the ‘additional cast members’ dress up in costume and pose with the patrons who wanted to snap a photo! I scoured up and down for the perfect backdrop and props and I found everything I needed!

Background: Motown Revue is a play conceived and written by Toshika Smith – she’s super sweet and very dedicated to what she does. She’s been running this play for the past 4 or 5 years and it just so happens this year, things lined up so I could participate. Some of you don’t know but I LOVE to sing, but since my schedule wouldn’t allow me to commit to the 2 1/2 month long practices, I was able to be part of the production through photography! (awesome right??!) The play is in 2 parts and takes you through the history of Berry Gordy’s Motown – 50s, 60, and 70s. The turn out was AMAZING BOTH NIGHTS! The audience danced, laughed, and relived their teen and childhood years. Some patrons even brought their kids so that the next generation could hear some good ole grown folks music!

Birthdays and Weddings! What a Month, What a Month!

Goooooooooooood morning to ya gov’nas! It’s somewhat super early but I could not hold in my excitement. This month has been another super duper crazy one for me, and these last few weeks will culminate an uber amazing time! All month I’ve been writing for WEEN ( www.weenonline.org/ ) <—- check my work out here || and interviewing some amazing women in the fashion and entertainment industry! On the photography end, a few test shoots had to be rescheduled but it’s all gravy; the concepts we have are going to be a big ball of crazy-classic-amazement! Tomorrow I (and my photog assistant TJ) will be heading out of town to attend the wedding rehearsal of one of my high school cheerleading teammates Amelia! From our consultations, her wedding is going to be tailored to the tee for she and her hubby-to-be! ( you like that rhyme?! haha) Dancing, spoken word, special ceremonies — it’s going rock!

Now for United States Current Events…

Next weekend, it will once again be the most important weekend in American history (after the birth and resurrection of Jesus of course. lol) …….**drumroll**…..MY BIRTHDAY!!!!!! ( cue the confetti )

I have planned a super swanked out dinner/night for about 29 of my closest friends and family. Since this is a milestone birthday I don’t mind dropping some figures to make sure that this is a birthday to remember ( good memories, no bad ones allowed)! 3-course personalized menus, comp access to roof tops and eclectic lounges — oh yes my dears, a great time is in store!

Despite all of the awesomeness that’s in store, I’m still kinda bummed I couldn’t invite ALL of my you guys so, for the month of May, I am running a [BELATED BIRTHDAY SPECIAL] in where you can score 25% off ANY shoot package….guess why it’s 25% ** wink wink **

We All [Choose]…

It feels like it’s been FOREVER and 26 days since I’ve posted!

Life has been very busy in these past few weeks, but still totally awesome! I’m booking my first few gigs of the new year and last week I received an email that I’ve been waiting several months for….but I’ll tell you guys about that in detail later! =)

In other news, I made my first photo delivery of 2013 this past weekend (sneak a peek below) which got me thinking of love and family. Love is SO beautiful and if you let it…it will find you and make you one of the happiest people in existence. But love doesn’t just happen. People don’t simply ‘fall’ in love. You don’t love your friends &  family out of the blue — we all CHOOSE to love. That’s what makes it so amazing!!! Think about it, if we were FORCED to ‘love’ someone; all the fun and meaning would be sucked right out of the experience! Photographing these clients and seeing how they were truly a loving family made me that much more honored to be able to capture that feeling on camera.

Last year, my awesome friend Gregory Cox released his EP “The Last Start” — one in which I had the pleasure of shooting the art work for — and one of my favorite songs on the album is titled “Choose”. It’s a lightly quirky, but funky record that speaks on love in the very same way I witnessed it in my client’s shoot. We all CHOOSE to love. ❤ Check it out and take this song into your week — CHOOSE to love.

Hey guys! It’s been a WHIIIIIIIIIILLLLEEE since I’ve updated the Official [Joc’s Photography] Website! I’ve been so busy shooting, booking, working, editing, and juggling everything else in life; I haven’t been able to post any of my recent work!

A month ago I had the pleasure of working with my good friend producer (and uncanny model) Sam Harmonix (Sam Pounds). I got so caught up in making sure I blogged about how the day went, I forgot to post the friggin photos!! Go figure!

WAKE UP Mr. West….I See Those Flashing Lights!

Have you ever had one of those weekends where you had what seemed like a GAGILLION things to do and not enough hours to do them in??? Well my friend, you know exactly how I felt this weekend.

All last week (my first full week back from vacay. sigh) I was helping my very good friend Andrea plan my goddaughter London’s VERY FIRST BIRTHDAY PARTY!!! Needless to say we had so many good ideas that got mumbled and jumbled and all tie-dyed together — we almost weren’t sure we were going to pull everything off.

On top of the helping plan the party, I had to play ‘catch up’ with photo shoot inquiries, editing, and deliveries — but the cherry on top was making sure I had everything in line for the Our Success Magazine Launch Event! As many of you already know, I have the pleasure of being added as a photog contributor to the mags roster. I was also featured as the October 2012 Woman of the Issue (yayyyy, still excited about that).

—REWIND TO FRIDAY, then FAST FORWARD an inch to Saturday. With my neice coming down for the birthday party, I ended up rushing out the door that night and arriving ‘fashionably late’ to the OSM event AND on top of that I had a slight dress malfunction!!! After pulling myself together and virtually tearing down the highway (…VIRTUALLY) I met up with my [creative half] & [artsy ace boon] Rich Griffis; who inadvertently became my escort for the night. haha

Needless to say, the Launch was a success (no pun intended) and between my goddaughter’s party Sunday and driving my neice back home, I was worn to the doggone bone (no rhyme intended)!! I AM proud of myself however seeing as how I just successfully completed an entire day of work today with only like 3 hours of good sleep!

But hey…that’s the sign of a good weekend right?!

Where’s BoyzIIMen When You Need Them? I Need To Wish My Mama Happy Birthday!!

Today is a great day in my family because as of 12:01am, it is officially my mom’s birthday! Yayyyyy (throws confetti around the room)

My mom is literally the sweetest, meekest, kindest, nurturer in the history of the world — mmmm well besides Jesus’ mother Mary. haha She’s always been there with a shoulder whenever I needed her and even when she was told by doctors at my birth that I would be disabled and never know who she was, she didn’t care — she turned on her smile, and pushed through! So glad she did, then I wouldn’t be here to share wonderful photo experiences with you all!!

So in honor of my wonderful mother, here is a photo of when we met for the first time — as well as her favorite Spice Girls song. ❤
